Member's Story: Gilda's Club Worldwide Annual Appeal
Jerry's Story
When the doctor told me that, at best, I had three years to live, I was still in my early 20’s, with “my whole life ahead of me.” Looking back – two bone marrow transplants and several remissions later – I see how different life would have been had I found Gilda’s Club at age 23, rather than 47.
I came to Gilda’s Club when a good friend who was involved with the Club literally drove me to it, took me by the reluctant hand and walked me through the red door. I was so lucky. I’ve been a Member of Gilda’s Club for six years and I can tell you, in short, it gives you your life back.
At Gilda’s Club people from all walks of life, all ages, and all sorts of personal situations come together and learn together. We cook, we laugh, we play, we exercise, we listen to experts give advice and insight. And by being together, we learn to make the most of every day.
What goes on inside the Clubhouse is just short of a miracle. People arrive needing something themselves, and almost always leave able to give something back to others. It’s a marvelous transition to watch and I see it at almost every visit I make to Gilda’s Club.
The Annual Appeal plays an integral role in positioning Gilda’s Club Worldwide as the premier emotional and social support community for people living with cancer and their families and friends. Gifts to the Annual Appeal provide the financial resources that enable us to maintain and expand our affiliate network, hire and support our staff, and continue to develop and offer a wide range of activities that are always FREE of charge to our members – men, women and children – who, just like Jerry, have experienced the magic of Gilda’s Clubs.
Over the past 12 years, our network of clubhouses located throughout North America have helped change the lives of tens of thousands of members by helping people learn to LIVE with cancer, whatever the outcome. Our long-term goal is to strengthen global understanding that emotional and social support are as essential as medical care when cancer is in the family. Currently, we have 21 open Clubhouses and 9 in development. Through your generosity, we can help provide support to even more families living with cancer at a time when they need it most.
